Illinois State Law Requires Use of Carbon Monoxide Detectors on Jan 1st
MXenergy helps homeowners comply with newly adopted practice

STAMFORD, CT  December 27, 2006 - The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that 40,000 people are affected by carbon monoxide poisoning each year.  Thanks to new legislation in Illinois homeowners can be protected from joining those statistics.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) carbon monoxide is a colorless, odorless, and tasteless gas produced when fossil fuels-such as gasoline, oil, and natural gas-are burned.  It's completely undetectable to human senses, yet it is among the leading causes of accidental poisoning deaths in the United States.  A carbon monoxide detector, which works like a smoke detector, can warn residents about potentially dangerous carbon monoxide levels.  A new law that takes effect January 1, 2007 in Illinois requires a carbon monoxide monitor within 15 feet of every sleeping room in residential structures.

"As a supplier of natural gas, we understand the importance of carbon monoxide monitors," said Jeff Mayer, CEO of MXenergy.  "We are currently offering free carbon monoxide monitors to any new customers in the NICOR territory."

The CPSC also gives the following advice about carbon monoxide poisoning:  symptoms can resemble the flu and may include dizziness, nausea, headaches, coughing, an irregular heartbeat, and pale skin with cherry red lips.  Symptoms diminish and altogether disappear when fresh air is allowed into the area.  They also recommend anyone who suspects CO poisoning to open all the windows before leaving the house and call 911 or the local fire department.

MXenergy is offering a free Senco* carbon monoxide monitor to new customers who sign-up for a fixed natural gas price plan in the NICOR service area through March 1, 2006. Customers interested in learning more about this offer should call 800.456.0565 and mention offer code CM126.
