MXenergy Signs on as “Chronicle in Education” Kid’s Game Sponsor

HOUSTON, Texas – Jan. 2, 2008 – When the American Hockey League’s Houston Aeros face off on Jan. 10 against the Manitoba Moose, 170 students from John J. Herrera Elementary School will experience every slap shot, save and score, thanks to MXenergy.  

MXenergy is teaming up with the Aeros, the primary developmental affiliate for the National Hockey League’s Minnesota Wild, as a sponsor for the team’s 5th annual “Chronicle in Education Kid’s Game,” which provides tickets for students of Houston-area Title I schools.

"This event helps students learn valuable skills while enjoying a great day of hockey with the Houston Aeros," said MXenergy Chief Operating Officer Steve Murray. “Houston is home to MXenergy’s largest facility, so it’s important for us to support programs in the city and community where we and many of our customers work and live."

The Chronicle in Education Kids Game is designed to help children in the Houston area prepare for their standardized state TAKS and TEKS tests. The Aeros are tying in school curriculums with the game of hockey to provide a fun, learning environment for the students. Students who participate receive a TAKS and TEKS lesson plan booklet compliments of the Houston Chronicle. In past years, the event has drawn over 7,000 students representing more than 40 schools.

Title I of the “Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965” provides funding to assist designated schools in achieving a high-quality education and meeting state academic achievement standards and state academic assessments.

“This game provides a great opportunity for the community to gather and enjoy themselves on what would otherwise be a busy work day.” said Andrew Stephens, the Aeros’ coordinator of community programs. “The kids are always very energetic and enthusiastic at these games and this helps give them a fun, alternative way of learning. We are extremely grateful that MXenergy is able to help sponsor a group of these students, providing them with this opportunity they otherwise would not have had.”
