Q: Who can supply energy other than the utility?
MXenergy and other Energy Service Companies (ESCOs) are businesses that are licensed and approved by your state, allowing them to compete to supply energy.

Q: How long has MXenergy been in business?
MXenergy was founded in April 1999 and first started serving customers in the Baltimore Gas & Electric territory in December 1999. We are now a licensed and authorized supplier in 12 states, British Columbia and Ontario. MXenergy serves customers in 32 utility territories—more than any other supplier in North America.

Q: What is MXenergy’s mission?
To help commercial and residential customers manage the risks of energy volatility by providing competitively priced products and services.

Q: What does MXenergy do that is different from traditional utilities?
Historically, utilities have simply charged their customers for the cost of their energy supply. If the market price of gas or electricity went up, the customer's bill went up. Few utilities offered their customers the ability to manage the cost of their energy supply for more than a month or two at a time. We can help customers manage their energy supply for up to three years.

Q: Does MXenergy charge any monthly fees?
We do not charge any monthly service fees. We bill only for the cost of the commodity along with necessary state and federal taxes required by law.

Q: Will the quality of gas I receive be affected?
No. Natural gas must meet certain standards before it is allowed to enter the transportation pipelines. Once gas is introduced into the pipelines, it is commingled with the gas already present so that the quality of the gas you receive on behalf of MXenergy or the utility companies is indistinguishable.

Q: If I switch to an ESCO, who will handle repairs and maintenance?
While MXenergy supplies your natural gas or electricity, your utility company continues to deliver the energy to your home or business. The utility handles meter reading and repair, gas transportation, line repair and emergency calls.

Q: Can an ESCO shut off my service?
The control of your service remains with your utility company. If you lose your supplier for any reason, you will be given 15 days notice to allow you time to choose a new supplier, or by default you will return to the local utility.

Q: If I switch to MXenergy, can I decide later to return to the utility?
Yes. If for any reason you decide that you prefer having your energy supplied by the utility, you can switch back subject to the terms of your MXenergy contract.

Q: Can I be switched from one ESCO to another without my knowledge or approval?
No. To minimize the potential for unauthorized switching (a process known as “slamming”), ESCOs are required to agree to state rules and guidelines for obtaining, maintaining and stopping service. These provisions, copies of which are filed with the state, include a ban against unauthorized switching. ESCOs that slam must pay all costs and fees incurred by the customer and the utility arising from such a switch, as well as any costs to switch the customer back. The state may also impose additional penalties.

Q: What is the utility’s position on switching to an ESCO?
Most utilities have programs in place introducing customers to deregulation and promoting the idea of choice in their energy suppliers. They understand that a competitive marketplace should bring about enhanced services and potential price benefits.

Q: If I use an ESCO, will I receive two bills?
MXenergy will work with your utility company to offer you a single bill that covers all monthly consumer charges. There may be circumstances that require two bills.

Q: What makes MXenergy different from other ESCOs?
We are dedicated to providing customers with complete and honest disclosure about the risks of their energy supply. We cannot promise that customers will save money compared to their local utility; after all, nobody can predict the future. But if energy prices continue to rise, our customers will control their costs and save money.

Q: What makes MXenergy the best choice?
When comparing our offers to other suppliers and local utilities, you need to consider the probability of rising energy costs. You must also keep in mind that local utilities pass through energy costs, high or low. Call an MXenergy Customer Care Professional and receive local market consultation Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. ET at 877.875.8567.
