Cold air leaks into your house around windows, doors, electrical outlets, light fixtures and gaps in corners. It's not only the cold air leaking in to worry about – your warm is escaping, too. Your attic is probably the largest leak. Insulating and sealing large spaces is the best cure. Check for open fireplace dampers. You may be able to apply air sealing materials including caulk and weather-stripping to appropriate sized cracks – it makes a difference you can feel. What you might find in your attic – besides bird nests or leaves in your vents – are improper attic ventilation that doesn't remove unwanted heat in the summer and unwanted moisture all year round.
