Family Energy Education
You've probably heard a lot about energy. Well, what exactly is energy?
Energy is the ability to do work or the ability to move an object. Here we're talking about the stuff that comes out of our outlets or heaters, though. Energy is used in everything we do in life! You wouldn't be able to light or heat your bedroom, listen to your stereo, power up your video game system or even read at night without energy. It is everywhere, and it's all our responsibility to use as little as possible.
Energy is classified into two primary categories: renewable and non-renewable.
Renewable energy comes from things that won't run out, such as sunlight, water and wind. Renewable energy can be replenished in a short period of time. We draw on this type of energy over and over again, and it creating energy from renewable sources can be better for the environment.
But most of our energy comes from non-renewable sources, such as natural gas, oil and coal. Non-renewable energy is what most people use to heat, cool and light their homes and businesses. Non-renewable energy cannot be replenished in a short period of time, and we cannot use it over and over again.
