Energy for Your Business
Energy performance is front-and-center for all businesses, both as a cost-savings tool, and to reduce our consumption of natural resources.
There are many things businesses can do to cut back.
One basic step is identifying the equipment that uses the most energy, such as equipment that runs most of the time or that has extensive start-up energy usage. Are these necessary and efficient?
The Department of Energy offers Save Energy Now energy assessments to help develop a cost-effective plan to lower your energy consumption. An energy assessment should show where you use and waste energy, help find opportunities to increase efficiency, and determine potential upgrades that may pay for themselves. The DOE has found that a typical business can see an energy cost savings of 10-20 percent following an assessment.
Basic Business Energy Saving Tips:
- Dial down the thermostat, especially when the building is empty and install programmable thermostats.
- Figure out where you really need lights and use energy efficient bulbs and motion sensors.
- Turn down your hot water heater temperature and insulate the tank.
- Keep unused areas of your business sealed off and unheated and cooled.
- Turn off machines and equipment when not needed.
- Consider every crack or hole in your building and around doors and windows an energy expense and seal as necessary.
- Form an energy savings team at your business to enact these measures and have those employees encourage their colleagues to be energy efficient.
